Meet three very grateful students who benefit from The Carlow Fund...

Meet Robin

Robin Ponton

Robin Ponton
, a Business Management major with a minor in Corporate Communications will be graduating in May 2012. She was first introduced to Carlow University by her mother, DeShauna Ponton, class of 2008. She was amazed by the positive experience while sitting in Dr. Stewart's philosophy class; and applied to Carlow during her high school senior year.

Robin is grateful for the funding and scholarships she's received (including the Pittsburgh Promise). Robin says she has always been a hard worker—never accepting the easy way out. She has taken no fewer than 18 credits each semester. Along with being a full-time student, she is an intern at the Small Business Administration (SBA); she mentors Carlow students, is a student leader, created BLOC (Business Leaders of Carlow), is a member of Women in Communication, and was also a senator for the School of Management.

Robin has made a tremendous effort to ensure a career upon her graduation in May, by applying to five career positions each week during the spring semester. (We’ve heard that she's gotten a job offer!)

Thanks to her Carlow University experience, she now has a broader view of the world, making her a better person. Though she will miss Carlow, she is thankful for the growth and skills that she has learned and is planning to continue to attend certain BLOC activities and events as an alumna.

Meet Jennifer

Jennifer Hasselrig

Jennifer Haselrig
, a junior Forensic Accounting major comes from Johnstown, PA. She considers Carlow a second home and values knowing all of her teachers, has many good friends, and is thankful for Jermaine McKinley, director for the Mercy Center for Service, and Chris Meaner, director of Student Activities for their support in her life here at Carlow University.

Feeling blessed to have this opportunity at Carlow University; she is making the most of her Carlow experience by being an active leader in various student activities. She is a mentor for the First Year Mentor class, team teaches with Professor Susan Rubish Geisler, is the president of BLOC (Business Leaders of Carlow), is a member of the Black Student Union, and vice president of the Student Government Association.

Along with the various activities with which she is involved, Jennifer always takes between 16-18 credits per semester. She says that her academic experience has "opened her mind to the world" in a professional way and has shown her the "good in helping other women to succeed." She believes that Carlow's catholic-based mission has much to do with her philosophy. Jennifer stated, "If you are passionate about succeeding, then you are also passionate about what can help you succeed."

Jennifer's son, Julius, is an important part of her life and has inspired her to make the most of this "blessing as a student at Carlow University." With the guidance and mentoring of her advisor, she is considering adding another major, as well as a minor in Social Work.

Meet Breanna

Breanna Evans-Potter

A graduate of Cornell High School in Coraopolis, Breanna Evans-Potter is a sophomore nursing major at Carlow University. Visiting Carlow University during high school, she realized that she was "sold" during her second visit and claims that she "loves Carlow!"

Breanna has the distinction of being the youngest Resident Assistant in the residence halls and says that this experience has been eye opening and gave her a chance to learn and grow. Along with being a full-time student and Resident Assistant, she also is a work-study in Admissions as a team leader and tele-counselor, she's a family tour guide, a member of SPiRiT, holds an office position with SNAP (Student Nurse Association of Pennsylvania) where she has worked with the Sisters of Mercy at the convent craft room.

Breanna loves her classes; saying Carlow is a "friendly campus where people are so welcoming and willing to help." She believes that the one-on-one connection with professors is a treasure and states that her friends at other universities are surprised that she talks with her instructors before and after class, even emailing or calling them if they needs arise. She also took part in the Alternative Spring Break traveling to Immokalee, FL. She felt happy to be there with other classmates to lend a hand and to have a chance to give back.

Having received a lot of financial aid, this hard working student is able to take at least 17 credits each semester. In addition to her PELL and PHEAA grants, she also receives the Marlene B. Noel '85 Endowed Scholarship, and work-study. She is so grateful and thankful to the Carlow benefactors who make this possible for her.

Thank you for making a difference, Carlow Community!
